Siliken Adheres to PV Cycle
May, 24, 2009.
Aware of the importance of social responsibility of companies, SILIKEN has committed itself to keep its plants and production processes clean without contamination, or to minimize it, and to save energy. The company’s management is strongly convinced that a renewable energy firm, in addition to the contribution it makes with its activity, should be an example of sustainable development regarding all of its tasks. That is why the impact this company has on each environment is always positive. And the company wants to project this impact to the future guaranteeing that the dismantling of the Siliken PV installations will be carried out in an environmentally friendly way and that the components will be recycled properly.
At Siliken, we are aware of the need to interact respectfully with the environment. Therefore, when we found out about the existence of such an organization as PV Cycle, we began all the arrangements in order to join this organization and since April 2009 our company has become a member. To belong to PV Cycle gives Siliken a direction in which to work, within the EU regulated framework and together with other PV companies, following a joint line of work leading to better solutions that will benefit the interested parties (producers, authorities, clients, and society). Adhering to the Declaration of PV Cycle is yet another gesture with which Siliken expresses its commitment to environmental protection, good practices and the separation of waste materials generated by the solar panels that have reached their end of life.
PV CYCLE was founded in 2007. Its specific goal was to implement the PV industry’s commitment to set up a voluntary take-back and recycling programme for end-of-life modules that had generated clean, renewable energy. The PV modules that have reached their end of life must be collected and recycled in order to reduce the amount of waste and allow re-using the valuable raw material for producing new modules.Closing the life cycle of these modules, the members of the PV industry accept their responsibility and are changing the sector into "double green".
The first large amount of end-of-life PV modules is still 10 years away. However, the members of the European Association PV CYCLE signed a joint Declaration by which they committed themselves to create a voluntary take-back and recycling scheme for end-of-life modules. By signing this Declaration, PV CYCLE agrees to collect at least 65% of the modules installed across Europe since 1990 and recycle 85% of the waste. The association will appoint certified controllers to validate the yearly statistics on the recovered and recycled amounts. The PV CYCLE members are producers or importers of photovoltaic modules in Europe and represent over 70% of the European PV market.
The philosophy of this organization is that solar energy can truly be considered sustainable only after the life cycle of the PV modules closes, providing the industry with the recycled raw materials necessary for their manufacturing.
